Tips to Counter Depression in Young People
Twenty years ago, depression in young people was almost unheard of. However, because of increasing stress on kids today, less physical activity, and poorer nutrition, depression in young people is becoming more commonplace. What can be done to help combat the onslaught of depression that our youth today experience?
First, we need to make sure that the young people we care about are getting enough physical activity. Depression can often be bolstered by poor self-esteem. Physical activity can directly improve self-esteem and self-worth.
Additionally, when someone participates in physical activities, their body releases feel-good endorphins. Endorphins are the body’s way of coping with stress and sadness. Exercising multiple times a week can greatly reduce the risk of depression.
Another way to reduce the risk of depression in young people is by ensuring that they are eating proper nutrition. Believe it or not, the food served in the school cafeterias are not nutritionally balanced.
Our bodies work best when we feed them a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that come from fresh, whole plant food. Regardless of what the box says, processed foods lack the vital nutrients that our bodies crave. Young people need a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables on a daily basis in order to fight depression.
Lastly, we need to remember that the challenges facing young people today are much more complex than the challenges faced by the youth of a decade ago. Now, kids can face what is called “cyber bullying.”
Because of all the social media websites that offer an air of anonymity to their users, the young people of today are not just bullied in person, but they are also bullied online. This online bullying can lead to severe depression and antisocial behavior if not stopped.
To combat depression in young people, ensure they receive adequate nutrition and exercise. You should also be aware of any cyber bullying that may be occurring and take steps to stop it.
